Premier coureur \u00e0 r\u00e9aliser le doubl\u00e9 Tour\u00a0\u00a0d&rsquo;Italie-Tour de France\u00a0en\u00a01949\u00a0(exploit r\u00e9\u00e9dit\u00e9 en\u00a01952), il remporte notamment cinq\u00a0Tours d&rsquo;Italie, deux\u00a0Tours de France, cinq\u00a0Tours de Lombardie, trois\u00a0Milan-San Remo, un\u00a0Paris-Roubaix, une\u00a0Fl\u00e8che wallonne, quatre\u00a0Championnats d&rsquo;Italie sur route\u00a0et trois championnats du monde\u00a0: un\u00a0sur route\u00a0et deux en poursuite. Il d\u00e9tient \u00e9galement le\u00a0record de l&rsquo;heure\u00a0de\u00a01942\u00a0\u00e0\u00a01956. Sa carri\u00e8re a \u00e9t\u00e9 marqu\u00e9e par sa rivalit\u00e9 avec\u00a0Gino Bartali. <br \/>Coureur complet, son palmar\u00e8s compte des victoires majeures dans diff\u00e9rents types de comp\u00e9tition, sur route et sur piste.
